Low Price Domain Name Registration

Everyone wants to find low price domain name registration but with all of the companies out there claiming to have cheap domain names, it’s hard to find the real domain name deals.
So, how much should you pay for a .com domain name? We looked at the top 20 domain name registrars listed on Wikipedia based on volume of domain name sales.
.com domain names range from free to over $35.00 per domain name per year. But, generally speaking, if you can get one for around $10 USD per year, you’re doing quite well.
The domain name registration companies can give you a low price on a domain name, but there are a few things you have to watch for:
- What type of domain name are they selling? / What is the Top Level Domain (TLD)? Is the low priced domain name a .com or a .info? Most people are looking for a .com domain name, but if that’s not important to you, there are other options. Most domain name registration companies have a special gate crasher price to get you in the door: 1-and-1 Internet has a $0.99 per year domain name for their .info domain names; OVH in the UK is selling .uk domain names for $1.49 USD (£1.00).
- Is the special low price (domain name registration) only for the first year only? For example, GoDaddy sells .info domain names for $0.99 per domain name per year, but the low price returns to the regular price in the second year price and you’ll have to pay $10.69 per year.
- Is the special low price (domain name registration) for the first “term” only? For example, Yahoo Small Business sells .com domain names at $9.95 “per year”, but you can only get it at that low price for the first term (anywhere between 1 to 5 years.) Afterwards, Yahoo will charge you $34.95 (per year) to renew your domain with them.
- Is the low price for the domain name a transfer price, purchase price, or renewal price? For example, if we take the OVH example from the UK again, they charge $1.49 (£1.00) to transfer your .com domain name to them (and that pays for one year of domain registration), $5.95 (£3.99) to purchase a domain name (for the first year) and $8.93 (£5.99) to renew a .com domain name at the regular price. So what does the low price domain name registration actually cover?
- Does the domain name registration company sell to end customers or to other businesses and domain name resellers? Sometimes you find a great price, but they don’t actually sell to the end customer. For example, OnlineNIC sells .com domain names for as low as $8.89 but you can’t get that rate unless you are a reseller.
- How much will you have to pay for WHOIS domain name registration privacy? When you buy a domain name, usually all of your personal information gets listed in an online “WHOIS” domain name registry that is accessible by anyone. Several domain name registration companies offer a privacy feature that will mask your personal information with their company name. (WHOIS domain name privacy rules varies by country. For example, .CA domain name individuals are automatically hidden whereas you cannot get domain name privacy with a .US domain name.) 1-and-1 internet offers free domain name privacy whereas Network Solutions will charge you $9.00 per domain name per year.
- There are “free” .com domain names available but there is always a catch. Several companies like FastDomain and BlueHost offer a free .com domain name for life… as long as you keep a webhosting plan with them. (Not all webhosts offer a free domain name and free privacy, so that’s something to keep in mind.)
