We’re with BlueHost right now. We have a web hosting plan with them and most of our domain names are registered with them. (We do have a few .info domain names registered with GoDaddy)
But, eventually we’re going to have to renew, so we’re always keeping an eye on the market. (Especially now, given that Bluehost no longer offers free privacy domain registration. Read why we like domain registration privacy.) Deals come and go, good web hosts become bad ones. Who knows. If a good deal comes up, we might transfer our domain names over.
We’ve posted our domain name research here. The list is growing and we try to update it every month. Remember: You usually can’t get a refund on a domain name – so it’s buyer beware!

Absolutely Free Domain Name with Dot TK (Literally)
by Domain Names on Jan.12, 2010, under Articles
Dot.tk provides absolutely free domain names, but what do you get? Where’s the catch?
At first glance, .TK doesn’t seem too bad. You’ll have to give your email address which isn’t too bad.
Dot TK domains work by forwarding people to your real website. It redirects your traffic in a frame so the website address at the top will always literally say my-web-address.tk instead of my-web-address.tk/home or my-web-address.tk/post, etc.
You can also use dot TK domain names with your own DNS servers, which means that your website could say my-web-address.tk instead of simply redirecting to my-web-address.blogspot.com
And, dot TK domain names are absolutely free. Literally. As in, you don’t need to give any credit card information to get a domain name and you don’t pay a cent.
So, what’s the catch?
Well, when you register a .tk free domain name, you don’t legally own the domain name, you can’t sell or transfer the domain name, and you must have 25 hits per 90 consecutive days to keep the domain name. (Otherwise it gets released to the next person who wants to register the dot.tk domain name.)
If you’re starting up a website, do you really want to risk not owning the virtual land you’re building on? You could spend time building a web presence at your-domain-name.tk only to find that your web traffic drops and you lose the domain name because you didn’t meet your quota.
It’s a great place to start if you’re a kid, but if you’re serious about your website, you’ll probably want to be serious about your domain name as well.
If you want to pay to be the legal owner of a .tk domain name, it starts at $6.95 per domain name per year (if you’re willing to pay $62.55 for 9 years up front). The smallest amount you can pay is $19.90 USD for 2 years, which works out to be $9.95 per domain name per year.
If you’re going to pay $9.95 for a domain name, you might as well get a .com domain name for $8.99 per year from 1&1 Internet. Let’s be honest. If you want to be taken seriously on the net, you’ll want a .com domain name.

Best Domain Name Price on Just Host: $14.95 USD for a .COM domain name
by Domain Names on Jan.08, 2010, under Cheap Domain Name Price Watch
Since Bluehost no longer offers free domain privacy, we’re looking around to find cheap domain names. We might even consider switching webhosts if we can find a good deal… which is what brought us to Just Host.
Just Host doesn’t actually sell domain names unless you have a webhosting plan with them. (And then the domain names aren’t really worth it. Just Host sells domain names for $14.95 per domain per year. They also charge an additional $9.95 per domain per year to protect your privacy from the WHOIS database when registering your domains.
At that price, we we’re better off with Bluehost who sells domain names for $10 per domain name and charges only $4.95 per domain per year for the domain privacy.
Both Just Host and Bluehost offer a free domain name for life with the purchase of a web hosting plan. Just Host’s cheapest web hosting plan starts at $5.95 per month (based on a 12 month commitment), whereas Bluehost charges $8.95 per month (also on a 12 month subscription.)
All in all, I think we’ll keep our web hosting with Bluehost and keep on looking for another place to get our domain names.
- GoDaddy still offers the cheapest starting price for a .com domain name: $1.99 per .com domain name (with the purchase of a non-domain product) before returning to the regular price of $10.69 per domain name per year. (They’ll charge you an arm and a leg for domain name privacy registration: $8.99 per domain name per year)
- 1&1 still offers the best deal on a .com domain name. They charge $6.99 per domain name for the first year, and $8.99 per year after that. But, they offer free domain privacy registration, so they’re our top pick to transfer our domain names over when our current domain privacy with Bluehost expires.
To help you find the best domain name prices, we’ve published our research in a domain hosting comparison chart looking at the discount prices and regular deals from over 25 of the top domain registrars in a sortable table.
Best Domain Name Price on HiChina Web Solutions: $19.00 USD for a .com domain name
by Domain Names on Jan.08, 2010, under Cheap Domain Name Price Watch
HiChina Web Solutions offers English .com domain names for $19 per domain name per year. We couldn’t really find any sale prices or discount pricing on their domains, which for the most part, are rather expensive, especially considering that you can get .com domain names for under ten bucks.
They are the second Chinese registrar in the top 25 registrars based on market share research from RegistrarStats. Xin Net ranks higher, but their website is entirely in Chinese and is more difficult to navigate. HiChina has an English portal giving them more international appeal.
Overall, there’s not a lot that makes HiChina attractive to us.
- GoDaddy currently has the cheapest sale price on a .com domain name ($1.99 for a .com domain name for the first year, with the purchase of a non-domain product.)
- 1&1 Internet offers the cheapest regular price (renewal price) for a .com domain name: $8.99 per .com domain name per year. (Their sale price is $6.99 per domain name for the first year) Plus, 1&1 offers free domain privacy registration, which is something that HiChina and GoDaddy do not offer.
- HiChina has an annoying chat window that pops up every few minutes.
We’ve figured out who has the cheapest domain name registration today. Check out our free domain hosting comparison chart which compares the domain prices from over 25 of the top domain registrars out there in a sortable table.
Cheapest Domain Name Registration – 10 things to know
by Domain Names on Jan.03, 2010, under Articles, Uncategorized
Who has the cheapest domain name registration today? With so many registrars to choose from, how do you know if you’re getting the cheapest domain names?
There are hundreds of domain registrars out there – who really wants to go through each one to find the best prices? (Well, we do, but only because we’ve been burned in the past.)
We’ve posted our research for our friends into a domain hosting comparison chart with a really cool sortable table… but who has time for that.
So, here are ten things to know about the cheapest domain name registration deals out there. (Market share data is based on information from Wikipedia which comes from RegistrarStats – eNom’s statistic’s site.)
- The largest domain registrar in the world by market share right now is GoDaddy. They’ve registered over 33 million domain names. (The second place registrar is eNom which controls 9 million domains.)
- GoDaddy also currently has the cheapest sale price for a .com domain name which is $1.99 for one domain name (for the first year only and with the purchase of another product.) After that, the .com domain reverts to the regular price on GoDaddy which is $10.69 (per domain name per year.)
- The best regular price for a new .com domain name goes to Wild West Domains (which is the reseller brand for GoDaddy). Domain names go for $7.29 per .com domain name per year, but this price is only available if you have a Pro Reseller plan which costs $199.99 per year. (Making money online through reselling domain names isn’t for everybody.)
- So, the best deal on a .com domain name for the average person (people who just want a website address for their site) is $7.99 per domain name per year. This regular .com price is currently offered by Cheap-DomainNameRegistration.com (which is impressive because they’re really just a Wild West Domain reseller. You’ll see what we mean if you visit their site and then visit GoDaddy and WildWestDomains. Recognize the layout and branding? Their profit margin must be pretty slim on a .com domain.)
- GoDaddy, Wild West Domains, and Cheap-DomainNameRegistration.com are all part of the GoDaddy empire which currently charges $8.99 per domain name per year if you want to protect your privacy when registering domain names.
- The best price on a .com domain name from a registrar that offers free domain privacy registration is $8.99 per domain name per year. It’s a three-way time between 1&1 Internet, OnlineNIC (which requires a reseller plan), and Fabulous.com (which requires a monetization plan.)
- Fabulous.com is an interesting choice if you’re planning on parking domain names and running ads with them. If that’s the case, then you’re looking at $8.99 for a .com website address. Otherwise, their retail price for a .com domain goes for $29.95.
- The best sale price for a .com domain name with free privacy registration comes from 1&1 Internet. They offer $6.99 per domain name for the first year before returning to the regular price for 1&1 Internet which is $8.99.
- The average price for a regular .com domain name based on the top 20 domain registrars in the world (according to RegistrarStat’s market share research) is $17.39 per domain name per year. (The average price for a .com domain name listed in our domain hosting comparison chart is $16.39, but that’s based on an additional 10 registrars that aren’t necessarily market leaders.)
- The worst price for a .com domain name is a five-way tie between Network Solutions, eNom Central, PublicDomainRegistry.com (reseller), Register.com, and INWW.com (Melbourne IT) who all charge $35 per domain name per year. Although Yahoo isn’t in the top 20 registrars, they’re still charging the same regular price. (To be fair, Network Solutions, Yahoo, and eNom all charge a few pennies less, but it still rounds up to $35 per domain name per year.)
